The Porch Box Rescue
Sometimes rescue begins in the most unexpected moments.
What was supposed to be a simple home tour with a friend turned into something neither of us could ignore. As we walked the property, we heard faint little meows nearby. Following the sound, we discovered a box sitting on a neighboring porch. Inside were four tiny kittens, covered in fleas, dirty, and clearly in need of care.
We rang the doorbell and spoke with the homeowner through the camera. He explained that the kittens’ mother had been his cat, but she had recently died, leaving them orphaned. He said he didn’t want to care for them and was trying to find someone to come get them.
I asked if I could take them.
With permission, we gathered up the box and brought the kittens home.
That day became the beginning of their next chapter.
The first steps were simple but urgent—baths to remove fleas and filth, food for their hungry little bodies, warmth, safety, and a clean place to rest. Day by day, they began to change.
What had once been fearful, uncomfortable energy slowly turned bright and playful. They ran through the backyard, explored, chased each other, and began acting like kittens again.
One of the four needed additional medical care and a visit to the veterinarian, while the others recovered more quickly. Each one had their own needs, personalities, and pace of healing.
I spent over a month caring for these babies, making sure they were healthy, loved, and ready for the homes they deserved.
In time, three of the kittens were rehomed into loving families.
One stayed with me.
Their story is a reminder that rescue does not always begin with an organization, a building, or a grand plan. Sometimes it begins with hearing a cry for help—and choosing to answer it.
Cathy’s Corner is being built from moments like these: where compassion meets action, and vulnerable lives are given the safety and care they deserve.
